What can Child psychology help with?

Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Mental Health Problems
We all have difficulties from time to time and young people are no exception. Talking can help, but sometimes it is difficult to talk to the people closest to you. If the difficulties begin to affect everyday life and it seems that nobody can find a way forward it may help to talk it through with a Child Clinical Psychologist. This can help develop an understanding of what has led up to their difficulties and can support them in their search for solutions.

Developmental Difficulties
Developmental problems can present in a number of ways. Clinical Psychology assessment can help to understand the nature of the difficulties and the best way in which a child can be helped and supported. The management of developmental difficulties will always involve offering advice and support to parents and may also involve consultation to and support of a childís school.

Parenting and Family Difficulties
The transition to parenthood is an enormous step and the wealth of self-help books and TV shows about how to manage children is proof that babies do not come with manuals! There may be times when it is difficult to work out whether you are seeking help for an emotional problem, a developmental problem, or whether the whole situation just needs managing better! That is fine ?it is my job to help you to find out and advise you accordingly.

What to expect when you meet a Clinical Psychologist?

Initial Consultation and Assessment:
When you first come to the clinic there will be at least one assessment session with the child and their family to gather information about the difficulties, the way in which they have arisen, the childís development, schooling and family background. This session will last around 1.5 hours. You may be asked to complete questionnaires as part of the assessment. If there are concerns about a childís development, assessment will almost always include the use of standardised measures to develop a profile of the childís cognitive abilities, explore any underlying difficulties and consider their current attainment.

Treatment:
Following an assessment it may be clear that some form of treatment is indicated. In most cases a young person will be seen short term (6-10 sessions) although in some cases longer term therapy will be appropriate.

Treatment choices are always individually planned and based upon a careful assessment of the difficulties. Children and their families will always be involved in the decision about what form of therapy is likely to be most helpful. Any form of treatment is likely to integrate a range of different psychological models and approaches and may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Individual Psychotherapy, Family Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming (EMDR). Whilst treatment may involve some individual work for a child or young person, the involvement of his or her parents and family is often essential.
